EDUC 6165 - Week 3

Do you find yourself communicating differently with people from different groups and cultures?

I do believe that I communicate differently with people from different groups.  First of all, when  I communicate with my colleagues at work I make sure that I am professional and that I do not say anything that would offend anyone.  Although I am not the type to offend people with my words.  However, I do see myself being and keeping a professional conversation at work versus when I am with friends in a more comfortable environment.  I communicate with them different and can joke and laugh at our conversations.  As to people from other cultures I am very careful when saying things because I do not want to offend them.  I also know that some people do not like to hear another spoken language that they don’t know so I am careful to speak Spanish around people that do not understand the language.  I do not want to make them upset or make them think that I am speaking about them because that is the misconception of many people thinking that  we are talking bad about them in another language.

There are many different communication styles that I use when speaking to colleagues  is more professional as when  I am speaking to my children I use more loving manner showing them how much I love them or when I speak to my wife it is in a more romantic way.  Even when we communicate with text or social media is different nonverbal    communication from spoken words.

  2. Miguel,

I completely agree with you on the variation of language people use depending on the scenario/situation. I also think that nowadays, people are more sensitive to what they hear and are quick to become offended even if they hear only a part of a conversation and take something out of context. This does make most people become aware and careful of the choice of words they use. With that being said, do you think we are more apt to censoring ourselves because we don't want to offend others?

  3. Hello Miguel,
It is amazing to me how we as a people can find ourselves communicating the same message in different ways to different groups of people and other cultures that are different from our own. Thank you for sharing how you tend not to speak Spanish around people who do not understand the language. I am one of those individuals that is very uncomfortable when I hear people speaking a language that I do not know what they are saying, especially when I am at the nail salon. It frustrates me because I feel as though they are talking about me. If they only knew that this determines what their tip will be.

  4. Hi Miguel,
yes, I agree with you on this so much. When communicating with your colleagues or in professional settings its not hard to keep it professional and kind of mono toned. But when speaking to a loved one, it is a different type of communication skill. Great post, thank you for sharing!

  5. Hi Miguel, Great post. It is great that you know how to communicate with differently with people. I am the type that if I hears another language, I just wonders what they are saying because hearing another language other than English is fascinated to me. I think that depends on the people, we communicate differently as well like you stated. Everyone doesn't take communication the same. Great post.
